Huge amount of debris chokes river in Bosnia-Herzegovina after floods

Oct 14, 2024

Budapest [Hungary], October 14: A carpet of debris is floating in the Neretva river in southern Bosnia-Herzegovina, threatening the region that was hit by landslides, heavy rain and flooding in early October. Floodwaters swept away entire houses on October 4 after heavy rainfall caused rivers to burst their banks. Since then, rubble from buildings, household appliances, car tyres and other bits of debris have been floating down the Neretva river. Nine days after the disaster, a dam at Grabovica, about 10 kilometres downstream from the main disaster area around the village of Donja Jablanica, is keeping the debris from floating further downstream, Bosnian and Croatian media reported on Sunday. Experts and environmentalists fear serious consequences for the region should the dam burst under the pressure of the accumulated rubbish. (dpa)
