Ukraine continues to attack Russian soil, Putin decides to respond

Kyiv [Ukraine], August 24: Earlier, RT reported that Ukrainian forces attacked a ferry used to transport train cars in the port of Kavkaz, causing a large fire. As of yesterday afternoon, the fire had not been extinguished, according to TASS. A local official said that the ferry was carrying 30 fuel tanks when it was attacked.
In addition, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk announced that on August 22 they attacked a military base in Russia's Kursk province with US-made high-precision GBU-39 bombs, according to The Kyiv Independent. "A drone command post, a radio-electronic warfare unit, equipment, weapons and 40 Russian servicemen were attacked," Oleshchuk wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
Also on August 22, while visiting the border area in Sumy province, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country's forces had captured another settlement in Kursk and captured more Russian prisoners of war. On August 20, Ukrainian military commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that Ukrainian forces had advanced 28-35 km into Kursk as the unprecedented incursion entered its third week.
Since Ukrainian forces began their assault on Kursk on August 6, missile attack warnings have been issued several times and the Russian government has declared a federal state of emergency there. More than 133,000 people have fled their homes along the border in Kursk, acting governor Alexey Smirnov said.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Ukraine has lost more than 4,700 servicemen and 68 tanks since the start of fighting in Kursk, according to TASS. The Russian military is still conducting an operation to destroy Ukrainian formations in Kursk.
TASS also quoted Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov yesterday as saying that President Vladimir Putin had made a decision on responding to the attack by Ukrainian forces in Kursk. "I am absolutely convinced that all those responsible will be severely punished for the events in Kursk province," Mr. Antonov stressed.
Amid the escalating Russia-Ukraine conflict, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the capital Kyiv yesterday for talks with President Zelensky. This is the first trip by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine since Kyiv's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Prime Minister Modi's visit to Kyiv, which comes after he visited Moscow in July, is significant as Ukraine is trying to cultivate diplomatic ties in the Southern Hemisphere in an effort to secure a just solution to the conflict, according to Reuters.
